Dr. Larissa Seay
Hello! I am a licensed counseling psychologist in the state of California (PSY29181) with over 12 years of clinical experience in various settings, including community mental health, college counseling centers, a VA, and a residential treatment program for adolescents.
I received a dual degree B.A. in psychology and anthropology from Wichita State University and an M.Ed. in counseling from Wichita State University. I earned a doctorate in counseling psychology (Ph.D.) from the American Psychological Association-accredited graduate program at the University of Missouri—Kansas City. My postdoctoral tenure was at TLC Child & Family Services (a residential treatment campus for adolescents) in Sebastopol, CA.
I’ve also taught undergraduate psychology courses in the Bay Area, serving as a full-time visiting assistant professor at Saint Mary’s College of California (SMC) for two years, and teaching adjunct courses at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill and SMC. In these roles, I had the opportunity to mentor several students and provided extensive career support and advising. Training, education, and mentoring are a passion of mine in addition to clinical practice.
As a clinician, I integrate cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal/relational, and emotion-focused approaches to therapy, with a multicultural foundation. In the context of an emotionally-safe therapeutic relationship, together we can explore thought, emotional, relational, and cultural patterns that contribute to life challenges and find ways to increase resilience, acceptance, and/or empowerment in facing these challenges.
As part of my values and training, multicultural competence is a skill that I strive for in my practice. I encourage discussion of all aspects of identity (race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, sexuality, religion, region, nationality, age, ability/disability status, etc) and view clients as affected by broader societal factors including oppression and discrimination. I also have extensive experience providing therapy to individuals on the LGBTQ spectrum, including adolescents and adults who identify as transgender. As a member of the LGBTQ community, identity exploration is a specialty and interest of mine when working with clients.
Ultimately, however, I enjoy working with a variety of concerns (anxiety, depression, relationships, life transitions, identity development, empowerment, stress, adjustment, spiritual concerns, and many more; see Services for a more thorough list of concerns that Dr. Dashjian and I work with). As they say, variety is the spice of life!
